The District

Overview

Mulobezi District was formed in the Second quarter of 2012; it is the former Mulobezi constituency of Sesheke District and is situated in the South/East part of the Western Province of Zambia. The district is about 253 km North/West of Livingstone City and 782 km South/West of the Nation’s capital, Lusaka. It shares boundaries with five districts as follows; Luampa district in the North, Sesheke district in the South/West, Kazungula district in the South/East, Senanga district in the North/West, and Mwandi district in the South/East direction.

Climate and Vegetation

Most parts of the district are located in the rain shadow, this results in perpetual / annual
draughts. The southern parts of the district are normally drier compared to the northern parts.
The district normally experiences extreme temperatures of around 1 degree and above 36
degrees during the cold and hot seasons respectively. The district vegetation consists of
savannah type of woodlands with sandy soil as an extension from Namib Desert towards the
south except for some upper areas in the north which comprise the famous teak forest.

Hydrology

Mulobezi district has a number of tributaries to the Zambezi River (though the river does not
pass through the district) which include: Machile, Kwemba, Nang’ombe, Luamuloba, and
Luanja tributaries. The tributaries usually dry up in most areas making the water stagnant for
months.
